Was speaking to uncle Joe over breakfast this morning and it was the usual stuff but we did try not to be negative ! I was telling him about all the things im up to and he came up with a cracker quote:
'Well if you shake the tree hard enough, somethings gona fall out'
It summed it up perfectly.
The latest issue of Monocle talks about starting your own business. Oh yes, that conversation...
I havn't read much of it yet. You see im off to NY via London tomorrow and excited is putting it lightly. Lots of time to read. Im also meeting a few good guys over there, so more on that to come...
If you are thinking of starting your own business. I have few things that may help:
- Think about what place you are in life - if you are young and no family, then go for it as you will regret it in years to come.
- If you have family, house etc - just be aware a new business generally takes time. 3 years is an honest timeline, don't loose heart.
- If you are not bringing something new to the table, don't sit at the table as you will be starters.
- Research, research and then research some more.
- File papers, plans, ideas well - you will need them
- Don't give up your hobbies too long - too long and you will go insane
- Give and you shall recieve
- Treat customers and staff like the gods they are.
- Never loose perspective - sometimes the customer is wrong
- Have good relationships with suppliers
- On-line is very important. Very, very important
- Every morning, eat well, it may be your last meal that day.
- If you work harder than everyone else, it can't harm your chances.
- Don't forget your family and friends. They will share the good and bad times.
- Think about the name and mission statement. They should remain the same throughout the lifetime of you business, otherwise you are off course or need to open a different business.
- Good luck, you will need it at times.
Im outta here, NY here I come...No posts 'till im back. Enjoy the next edition of NICE. It will keep you going...
